Jean Schmidt = new GOP thorn
Harsh lesson learned I hope. New Ohio Representative, Jean Schmidt (R-Oh), received a rude awakening in Washington as backlash against her remarks on Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa) came pouring in. In a brief speech last week countering Murtha's call to withdraw troops over a six month period from Iraq, Schmidt said the following: "A few minutes ago, I received a call from Colonel Danny Bubp. He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message: that cowards cut and run, Marines never do."
And the best part is that Col. Bubp is denying ever making those remarks.
Now…she says that wasn't aimed at Sen. Murtha. Yeah right. Read the sentence again…"…asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message…". Who else were those comments aimed at? Murtha has served in the House of Representative for 31 years and fought in both the Korean and Vietnam wars as a Marine and was decorated for his service. You don't call a man like that a coward, regardless of your political view. And on top of that, the statement is stupid and nothing but a passionate plea without backing. Anyway, almost immediately after the comment was made, Schmidt issued a written apology to Murtha, but still stands by her statement, sans mentioning Murtha.
Chalk up another issue the GOP has to deal with…at this rate, the party may self-implode before 2008 elections.

This happens when you let a Walmart shopper go to Congress.
Hey, in some places Wal-Mart is all people have (unfortunately)...this happens when you let idiots go to Congress.
(I, in no way, support Wal-Mart and its methods, btw)
I'm sure the Mad Monkey will enjoy Al Kamen's latest WP column...
"And for some good news: former FEMA director " Michael D. Brown works for Michael D. Brown LLC," a change-your-address-book information notice said last week. Brown is going into the consulting business with offices here and in Boulder, Colo., the announcement said.
The office here is at 101 Constitution Ave. NW. Hmmm. That's the fancy new building that is also home to the tony Charlie Palmer restaurant. It says he's in Suite 525 East.
Sounds familiar. Oh, it's in the offices of the Allbaugh Co., run by former FEMA director and top Bush aide in Texas Joe M. Allbaugh , a college chum of Brown's who brought him to Washington. Same phone number, too.
Speaking of FEMA, this is the time of year when agencies begin touting their accomplishments over the past year. So a Department of Homeland Security e-mail Monday focused on some of its great moments in 2005.
DHS Today will highlight FY05 Accomplishments in this column over the next several weeks. This week's focus is on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The top FY05 FEMA accomplishments included:
Hurricane Katrina: The response to Hurricane Katrina was FEMA's largest response in its history . . .
It would be funny if it wasn't so sad and disgraceful.
